Help Shape Safer Travel in Elk Grove During Extreme Heat
Extreme heat is already affecting how people move around Elk Grove, from walking and biking on our expansive trails, to waiting at bus stops or driving on sun-exposed roads. As temperatures continue to rise and extreme heat events become more frequent and severe, the City is developing strategies to help residents move comfortably and safely on our roads, trails, and sidewalks. This effort is part of a new Heat-Ready Mobility Plan, which will examine how heat impacts roads, transit, sidewalks, and bike routes, and identify strategies to make travel more resilient during extreme heat.
Join us at an upcoming workshop or pop-up event, or share your input online.
Your feedback will help prioritize improvements like shaded transit stops, cooler walking and biking routes, and better access to air-conditioned transportation. It also strengthens the City’s ability to secure funding for these upgrades.

Background
Why Is the City Planning for Extreme Heat?
Elk Grove is experiencing hotter days and more frequent heat waves. Extreme heat can:
- Make walking, biking, and waiting for transit uncomfortable or unsafe
- Increase health risks, especially for children, older adults, and outdoor workers
- Damage pavements and infrastructure
- Disrupt daily travel and access to jobs, schools, parks, and services
Planning now helps the City identify risks and vulnerabilities within our transportation and mobility sector.
What is a Heat-Ready Mobility Plan and Why is it Important to You?
A Heat-Ready Mobility Plan is a roadmap to prepare Elk Grove’s streets, sidewalks, bikeways, and transit facilities for extreme heat.
Building off the City’s previous extreme heat planning efforts, the plan will:
- Identify areas most vulnerable to high temperatures that would most benefit from heat resilience strategies
- Recommend strategies such as cool pavement treatments, shade trees, shade structures, and upgraded transit shelters
Why it matters to you:
Whether someone walks their child to school, bikes to work, uses public transit, drives across town, or if uses mobility aids such as a wheelchair, extreme heat can significantly affect an individual's safety and comfort. This Heat Ready Mobility Plan is one of the avenues in which the City is working to keep people comfortable during extreme heat events, and to help them get where they need to go, safely.
