Help shape the future of the historic library site.
About this project
Following the relocation of the Elk Grove Library to its new home at 9260 Elk Grove Boulevard in Summer 2026, the historic facility at 8900 Elk Grove Blvd will become available for redevelopment. Positioned at the gateway to the City’s Historic Main Street, this property represents a unique opportunity to reimagine a public amenity that has been central to community life for nearly two decades.
The City of Elk Grove is committed to an inclusive and transparent planning process to identify a future use that honors the building’s heritage while meeting the evolving needs of the community.
Our vision
Repurpose the Historic Main Street library hand-in-hand with the community.
Guiding objectives
The project is guided by the following core objectives:
- Establish a creative, inclusive, and economically feasible vision in collaboration with the community
- Enhance the quality of life for Elk Grove residents
- Ensure project outcomes are consistent with the City Council’s vision
- Ensure that the final site use provides broad and equitable public benefits
What we’ve done so far
In Spring 2026, the City hosted four hands-on co-design sessions with young people from across Elk Grove including Joseph Kerr Middle School, Elk Grove High School, the Elk Grove Library, and the Teen Center. These sessions launched the community engagement work for the project.
Community input from these sessions will be combined with input gathered through the survey, summer events, and fall community workshops described below. We want to hear from as many community members as possible before any themes or recommendations are shared.
Get involved
Take the online survey
Tell us what kinds of spaces and activities matter most to you, what’s missing in Elk Grove, and what you’d like to see at 8900 Elk Grove Blvd.
Visit us at a community event
Throughout Summer 2026, look for the Beyond Books posters and the project team at events around Elk Grove. Stop by to tell us what’s needed, share ideas for the building, and learn more about the project. Event dates and locations will be posted here as they are scheduled.
