Broadband in Elk Grove: Resources and Updates
High-speed internet is an essential utility. Whether you are looking for more affordable service, troubleshooting a connection, or wondering about the City’s role in fiber expansion, this page provides the latest information and resources for our community.
Latest Project Update
The City of Elk Grove evaluated the potential for a City-led broadband expansion project. After completing digital access analysis and feasibility work, leadership determined that broadband expansion is not the best use of City resources, and formal broadband implementation efforts have been discontinued at this time.
Why this decision was made:
-
Widespread Coverage
93% of Elk Grove households already have access to high-speed broadband through private providers. -
High Costs
Building a City-owned network would require $26M to $40M in public funds while only reaching a small fraction of addresses not already served by the private sector. -
Private Investment
Private broadband providers are actively expanding their own fiber networks into the remaining "gap" areas of the city.
The City will continue to monitor these private expansions to ensure our residents and businesses stay connected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the City provide free Wi-Fi?
The City does not provide residential Wi-Fi, but free public Wi-Fi is available at most City facilities and the Sacramento Public Library.
What if I can’t get any provider to service my address?
If you live in a "gap" area, we recommend checking the California Broadband Map. If the map says you have service but you don't, you can file a "challenge" directly on that site to alert the state.
Is the Sacramento Public Library still lending hotspots?
Yes! Residents can check out mobile Wi-Fi hotspots for free using their library card. Visit the Sacramento Public Library website for availability.
