Gather your documents
- Complete set of construction plans
- Approval letter from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is required prior to submitting any applications for review.
Email the SMUD’s Solar Team or call (916) 732-6420 - Complete the application for permit

Prepare your files
- All documents must be in PDF format
- Combine the SMUD letter, specifications, and construction plans into a single PDF.
- Name your files appropriately
- Do not use special characters (-/*&@\) in the file names.
- Do not use spaces in the file names. Use an underscore _ instead of spaces.
- Identify submitted plans and documents with PC1, PC2 and PC3 based on the cycle of review submitted.

Complete the online application
- Attach all required supporting documents
- Pay the plan review fee or permit fee online using the eTrakit permit portal

Permit processing
- A permit technician will review the application for completeness.
- If accepted, the permit technician will process your application and notify you through email of the next step.
- If additional information is needed, we'll reach out to you through email. Please allow 24-48 hours for processing and notification.

Plan Review Timelines
- Solar PV Installation of up to 38.4 Kilowatts:
Allow a minimum of three business days for the first plan review; three business days for any subsequent. - Solar PV Installation of over 38.4 Kilowatts:
Allow a minimum of ten business days for the first plan review; seven business days for any subsequent.

Permit Issuance
- After the plan review is approved and all items are submitted, you'll receive an email that the building permit is issued. You can visit the eTrakit portal to print the permit and approved plans.
You must have the building permit, approved plans, and any supporting documents available for the building inspector during the inspection.
