The Elk Grove Police Department is investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision that claimed the life of a 78-year-old Elk Grove resident.
Officers responded to a two-vehicle collision on Elk Grove Boulevard at Stonelake Drive around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
Upon arrival, officers located a silver Honda Accord overturned on its side in the center median and a white Honda Accord with major damage to the driver's side, windshield, and roof.
The driver and sole occupant of the white Honda Accord, a 78-year-old Elk Grove resident, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the deceased will be made by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
The preliminary investigation indicates the white Honda Accord was traveling eastbound on Elk Grove Boulevard approaching Stonelake Drive when a silver Honda Accord traveling westbound on Elk Grove Boulevard crossed into the eastbound lanes. As the silver Honda Accord continued westbound, it struck the center median, causing the vehicle to become airborne before colliding head-on with the victim's vehicle.
The driver of the silver Honda Accord, a 51-year-old Sacramento resident, sustained multiple serious injuries. She was transported to a local hospital, where she currently is receiving treatment.
Investigators determined the silver Honda Accord had been fleeing the scene of a minor hit-and-run collision that occurred with another vehicle minutes earlier on Elk Grove Boulevard near Franklin Boulevard.
Traffic Detectives believe alcohol may have been a factor in the collision.
No arrest has been made at this time as the 51-year-old woman remains hospitalized and is receiving treatment for her serious but non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the collision. The investigation remains active, and any appropriate criminal charges or enforcement action will be determined as the investigation progresses and her medical condition improves.
