In a powerful display of recognition, respect, and partnership, the Elk Grove City Council took steps to amend the City’s Flag Policy on Wednesday night to display the Wilton Rancheria Tribal Flag at City Hall. View the meeting video.
The updated flag policy reinforces the City’s commitment to inclusion and cultural respect, while maintaining the integrity of its flagpoles as a channel for official City expression. The addition honors the Tribe’s sovereignty, deep-rooted connection to the Elk Grove region, and ongoing contributions to the community.
“Wilton Rancheria is part of Elk Grove’s history and its future,” said Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen. “This act of unity is more than symbolic. It reflects the friendship between the City of Elk Grove and the Wilton Rancheria. Flying their tribal flag is a visible reminder of the respect and connection we share and we’re proud to honor that relationship every day."
The Wilton Rancheria Tribal Flag prominently features an acorn, eagle and salmon, representing the self-sustainability, foresight and resilience of the Tribe. It is a source of immense pride for the Tribe and a teaching tool for the broader community.
“Raising our Tribal flag at City Hall may seem like a small gesture, but for us, it’s incredibly meaningful,” said Chairman Jesus Tarango. “This land is where our people have lived, walked, and taken care of for generations – it’s our home, and it always has been. We’re grateful to the City, and hope others take notice and follow Elk Grove’s lead in recognizing Tribes in visible ways.”
The tribal flag will accompany the flags of the United States, the State of California, and the City of Elk Grove. A new 25-foot flagpole will be installed at City Hall to accommodate the tribal flag. The City and Wilton Rancheria will collaborate to plan a community event and flag-raising ceremony in November as part of Elk Grove’s observance of Native American Heritage Month.
